The Farc militants resumed peace talks with the Colombian government in Cuba after a break, reports Agence France Presse.
“We resumed the talks, and are hoping continue to seek an agreement in terms known by the people of Colombia and the whole world,” said a statement by the Farc commander Joaquin Gomez.
The Farc leadership, before commencing the talks, stated that they rejected a legal framework proposed by the Colombian Constitutional Court that would allow the rebels to get involved in politics once they lay down their arms, with the exception of those most responsible for war crimes.
The Colombian President, Juan Manuel, defended the legislations, stating it “allows flexibility in judicial matters in order to achieve peace.”
The recommencement of talks comes, after FARC militants declared an indefinite unilateral ceasefire last December. The two sides have been working towards agreements on 5 main issues over the last 2 years.
