A video has emerged showing the apparent execution of one of the two Japanese hostages held by Islamic State.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the video of hostage Haruna Yakuwa as "outrageous and unacceptable" and demanded for the immediate release of the second hostage.
"This act of terrorism is an outrageous and unacceptable act of violence," he said.
"I again strongly demand the immediate release of Mr Kenji Goto unharmed."
Islamic State on Tuesday released a video, showing the Japanese hostages and demanding $200mn within 72 hours.
In Saturday's video, Mr Yakuwa's body appears to be held by Mr Goto, who says his “cellmate” is dead and pleads for his own life. He says Isis has dropped its demand for the ransom and instead now wants to organise a prisoner exchange for a woman held in Jordan.
Meanwhile the US-led coalition launched 26 air strikes on Isis targets.
A statement from the Combined Joint Task Force said 13 strikes hit in Syria and 13 hit in Iraq, including positions near Kobane, Mosul and Tal Afar.
US Central Command later said that of the strikes near Kobani “12 airstrikes struck eight Isis tactical units and a large Isis unit and destroyed an Isis vehicle, an Isis building, and eight Isis fighting positions”.
