Lebanese soldiers killed in Syrian border clash

At least five Lebanese soldiers have been killed after clashes with Islamic militants on the Syrian border, said Lebanon's army.

The fighting took place in the village of Ras Baalbek, with the army saying that a "military base in the Ras Baalbek mountains was attacked by a terrorist group".

The Independent reported a military official as saying “we are targeting their gatherings and positions with artillery shells and helicopter gunships.”

“We inflicted casualties among them” continued the official, with as many as nine militants said to have been killed.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, both Islamic State (IS) and Jabhat al-Nusra have clashed with the Lebanese military in recent months. A reported joint raid by the groups led to the capture of several Lebanese soldiers, with some two dozen remaining captive.
