US human rights officials warned North Korea that there would be escalating pressure on the country to end human rights abuses, reports Reuters.
The US assistant rights secretary for human rights and state department’s special envoy for North Korean human rights issues, warned that they had been mandated by the secretary of state to “step it up and do more.”
Speaking at the State Department on UN Human Rights Day, Tom Malinowski and Robert King, said,
“The message to these individuals is, ‘do not be part of this, because one day there will be change on the Korean Peninsula and we know your names and you do not want to be associated with that.”
Malinowski added that North Korean human rights would stay on the UN Security Council agenda “permanently, until it no longer needs to be there.”
The US warning comes as the United Nations General Assembly human rights committee passed a resolution last month calling for the Security Council to refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
UN resolution calls for North Korea to be referred to ICC (19 Nov 2014)
