Israel waged 'war of genocide' in Gaza, Abbas tells UN

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of carrying out a “war of genocide” in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly and called for punishment for war crimes.

The speech has been condemned by Israel, who accused Abbas of “diplomatic terrorism”, and the United States, with Stated Department spokesperson Jen Psaki saying it “included offensive characterizations that were deeply disappointing and which we reject.”

Abbas had told the UN General Assembly on Friday that
"In this year, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Israel has chosen to make it a year of a new war of genocide perpetrated against the Palestinian people."
He went on to say the conflict in Gaza was "a series of absolute war crimes carried out before the eyes and ears of the entire world," adding,
"In the name of Palestine and its people, I affirm here today: we will not forget and we will not forgive, and we will not allow war criminals to escape punishment."
