NATO leaders expected to unite against Russia at summit

NATO leaders convened at a summit in the UK to reiterate their support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, and discuss the threat of the Islamic State reports Al Jazeera.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held talks with US President Barrack Obama and other Western leaders on the conflict with pro-Russian militants in Ukraine.

The NATO chief on Thursday warned that Russian intervention in Ukraine is the most serious security threat in Europe since the Cold War.

A session of the NATO-Ukraine Council is expected to be held at this week’s summit.

The meeting is expected to “send a clear signal of their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and that the onus is on Russia to escalate the situation,” a British government source said.

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, warned that Ukraine’s NATO actions could derail peace talks with Russia, reports the Guardian.

Eastern European members have appealed to NATO to permanently station troops on territories bordering Russia to deter any possible Russian incursion or attack. NATO leaders are expected to agree to pre-position equipment and supplies, in these countries with logistical plans to rapidly provide troops in the event of an emergency.

Though not on the formal agenda, talks regarding combating Islamic State militants are expected to take place on the sidelines of the summit.
