Fighters from the Al-Nusra Front have killed two Lebanese soldiers and seized a police station in Lebanon, as fighting spilled across the border from Syria earlier today.
The town of Arsal saw fighters from the Islamist group clash with Lebanese security forces and storming a security building, with at least two civilians also reported dead.
Nabil Boumonsef from the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar told Reuters,
"In terms of repercussions for Lebanon, it is the most dangerous development since the eruption of the Syrian crisis.”
The violence reportedly began after a Nusra Front leader, Emad Jumaa, was arrested by Lebanese security forces. There were also reports that pro-Assad fighters from Lebanese group Hezbollah also supported an ambush on the Islamists, killing at least 50 in the attack.
The Lebanese army meanwhile vowed to be “firm and decisive in its response" to the violence in Arsal adding it "would not allow any party to transfer the battle from Syria to its land".
