France and UK evacuate nationals from Libya amidst escalating violence

France, Germany and the UK have advised their nationals in Libya to leave immediately, as the conflict between government forces and militias intensified, reports the BBC.

French government announced that it has evacuated French and British nationals from Libya. Unnamed sources within the French government told AFP on Friday that the diplomats were on board a warship headed towards a French port.

Last week the United States closed its embassy in Tripoli, evacuating staff.

Recent weeks have seen intense fighting centred around the city of Benghazi, where a main military base was captured by militants on Wednesday. Several nations, including China, Phillipines, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Britain and the US, have evacuated diplomats and expats from the region.
