Amnesty calls for UN war crimes investigation into Israel/Gaza conflict and regional arms embargo

The UN must set up a fact finding mission into Israel and Gaza to investigate airstrikes and shelling committed by both sides of the conflict that could constitute to war crimes, said Amnesty International in a statement Sunday.

“Swift UN action is needed as lives hang in the balance. The international community must not repeat previous mistakes, standing by and watching the devastating consequences for civilians of both sides,” said Amnesty International’s Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program, Philip Luther.

“There can be no excuse for either side failing to protect civilians, including journalists, medics and humanitarian workers, or civilian facilities,” he added.

The Amnesty statement further called for an arms embargo on Israel and all Palestinian military groups to deescalate the situation.
