India summons US diplomats over NSA spying

New Delhi summoned senior US diplomats, after leaked documents revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) was authorised to spy on the ruling party, BJP in 2010.

Describing the spying activities as "unacceptable", New Delhi "sought an assurance from the US that it won't happen again," reported NDTV.

"We told the Americans that our concerns remain and want the US to revert on facts. We want an assurance that it won't happen again," the news channel quoted a source in New Delhi as saying.

The incident overshadowed the visit of US Senator John McCain to New Delhi, who cancelled his scheduled press conference outside India's foreign minister after the diplomats were summoned, reported Reuters.

The classified documents published in the Washington Post on Monday, revealed that BJP was amongst a small group of political organisations that the NSA was authorised to spy on, including a Hezbollah-allied group in Lebanon, Amal, the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and the Pakistan Peoples Party.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is due to visit India shortly, whilst the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted an invitation extended by President Obama to visit the US in September.
