Palestinian teenager killed, revenge attack suspected

10:53 BST

The body of a Palestinian youth was found dead on Wednesday in what is suspected to be a revenge attack, following the killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank.

"In the early hours of Wednesday morning, police received a report of a person being forced into a car in Beit Hanina," the Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri told AFP.

"Within an hour, a body was found in Jerusalem that has still not been identified. We are looking to see if there is a connection between the two incidents."

Local residents identified the youth as a 16 year old boy named Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir, stating that he was kidnapped into a car by three [Israeli] settlers, the Times of Israel reported.

According to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot, the body was "charred, and showed signs of violence".

A senior official of the Fatah movement, led by the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, told Reuters that the Israeli government must take responsibility for the killing.

"The Israeli government bears responsibility for Jewish terrorism and for the kidnapping and murder in occupied Jerusalem," the official, Dmitry Diliani, said.

The suspected revenge attack meanwhile sparked clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian youth in East Jerusalem, with police firing rubber bullets and using tear gas, reported Al Jazeera and the BBC

An emotionally charged funeral took place on Tuesday, as the Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu declared a national day of morning.

Tensions have been mounting since the bodies of the three Israeli teenagers were found earlier this week, prompting Israel, which accuses Hamas of being responsible for the deaths, to launch air strikes over Gaza.

Mr Netanyahu vowed that Hamas "will pay", accusing it of being responsible for the deaths of the three teenagers. Hamas have denied involvement in the kidnapping and killings of the teenagers.

“Following over 18 rockets which were fired at Israel since Sunday evening, IAF aircraft carried out a precision strike against 34 targets in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli military, IDF, told the
Times of Israel on Tuesday, shortly after the air strikes began.

"The disappearance and the killing of the three settlers is an Israeli story used as propaganda to start a war against our people. We warn Israel against any stupid action. If Israel wants war, the price they will pay will be greater than previous war," the Hamas spokesperson, Sami Abu Zuhri told Al Jazeera

The three teenagers, from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, went missing on June 12th. Hundreds of Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces in recent days during a mass search for the missing teenagers.

"This atrocity is the direct result of the pact between President Abbas and the Hamas terrorists, the pact that allowed Hamas to establish its presence in the West Bank," the Israeli government spokesperson, Mark Regev, told reporters on Tuesday.

In a statement immediately after the discovery of the three bodies, President Barack Obama said:
"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms, this senseless act of terror against innocent youths. I also urge all parties to refrain from steps that could further destabilise the situation."
The air strike over Gaza follows reports that rockets were fired into southern Israel on Monday.
