Unprecedented deployment of Kurdish Peshmerga forces to combat advancing ISIS militants in regions vacated by Iraqi forces is winning support of vulnerable minorities, reports Agence France Presse.
The Peshmerga, known for their devout commitment to the Kurdish nationalist cause and regarded as well-trained, well-armed and capable, are the military vanguard of the Kurdish struggle for self-determination. The term Peshmerga translates to ‘those who follow death.’
Several Iraqi refugees have moved Kurdish controlled regions to seek safety and protection, reports Al Jazeera. Thousands of Christians have fled to Kurdish regions over the past few weeks.
Father Jebrail Gorgis Toma, a Vatican educated priest from the Christian community, was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying,
“Together with the Kurdish authorities and other humanitarian partners, UNHCR has helped to expand the Garmawa camp in Dohok where more than 1,000 displaced people are now staying," said Stephane Dujarric.

“We are fed up with the conditions in other parts of the country. But Kurdistan has proven itself in terms of stability, economic development and democratic measures.”The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, today announced that the UNHCR would be working with Kurdish authorities to run camps to provide basic sustenance for the refugees, reports the Business Standard.
“Together with the Kurdish authorities and other humanitarian partners, UNHCR has helped to expand the Garmawa camp in Dohok where more than 1,000 displaced people are now staying," said Stephane Dujarric.
