The number of people worldwide who have fled from war or persecution exceeded 50 million in 2013, for the first time since World War Two, the UN refugee agency says.

Of these, refugees (those who have been forced across a state border) are far outnumbered by the internally displaced (IDP) - people who have been forced to flee their homes, but remain inside their own countries. The latter number 33.3 million.
