A report by Al Jazeera, saying that crime amongst members of Sri Lankan security forces has risen, has been rejected by the Sri Lankan military.
Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that parties “with vested interest” are trying to discredit the military by making these allegations.
The brigadier showed statistics to show that 31 individuals, out of 916 arrested in connections with homicide cases, are members or former members of the security forces, saying that this proved the allegations made against the forces were false.
Sri Lanka's security forces are accused of killing thousands of Tamils during the armed conflict, including through extrajudicial executions. No arrests have been made in relation to these allegations.
