Former defence spokesman for Charles Taylor detained and questioned in the US

Prosecutors in the US may consider pressing charges of war crimes against a former defence spokesman of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPLF), reports AllAfrica news.

Jucontee Thomas Woewiyu, who was arrested this week at Newark Airport due to concerns over the validity of his citizenship  has been denied bail by a US judge, reports Voice of America.

When asked whether he had ‘either directly or indirectly persecuted any group for a number of reasons, including political opinion and social affiliation,’ Woewiyu replied with a ‘No.’

Woewiyu serves as a defence spokesperson for  the NPFL , a party headed by a convicted war criminal, Charles Taylor, during the conflict in Liberia.

Woewiyu has been officially detained due to charges of perjury and fraudulent misrepresentation in immigration applications.
