UN pledges to protect civilians from genocide in South Sudan

The United Nations warned today that that South Sudan was on the brink of genocide and large scale famine, reports The Times.

The UN special envoy for the prevention of genocide-, Adama Dieng, pledging to protect civilians from genocide, said,
“We owe a pledge to take all possible measures within our power to protect populations from another Rwanda, there is no excuse for inaction.”
Speaking on a visit to South Sudan, the Rights Chief, Navi Pillay, said she was ‘appalled by the apparent lack of concern that both the president and rebel leader had shown for the suffering civilians.
“The country’s leaders , instead of seizing their chance to steer their impoverished and war-battered young nation to stability and greater prosperity, have instead embarked on a personal power struggle that has brought their people on the verge of catastrophe,” she added.
