The Palestinian president, in a statement released by the Palestinian official news agency yesterday, called the Holocaust ‘the most heinous crime in modern history’, reports The Guardian.
Mahmoud Abbas’ statement, which coincided with the Holocaust remembrance day, said,
Israel today rejected, Abbas’ commemoration of the Holocaust as an attempt to ‘placate global public opinion,' reports Voice of America.
Commenting on Abbas’ statement to CNN the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said,
Ministers from Hamas in recent years have publically condemned the Holocaust. In 2008 a minister from Hamas wrote in The Guardian to dispel claims of Holocaust denial.

“The Holocaust is a reflection of the concept of ethnic discrimination and racism which the Palestinians strongly reject and act against.”Calling for a political solution to end the conflict in the region he said,
“On the incredibly sad commemoration of Holocaust Day, we call on the Israeli government to seize the current opportunity to conclude a just and comprehensive peace in the region, based on the two-state vision, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.”The Palestinian statement came amidst Israeli disgruntlement over a unity deal signed between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
