The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, speaking at the Rwandan genocide memorial events today, said he was ashamed of the way the situation was handled by the international community, stating,
Meanwhile, the French ambassador to Rwanda was banned from attending memorial events for the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide amidst arguments regarding France’s controversial role in the slaughters of 1994.
The French government initially announced that it would pull out of the events after the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, accused France of aiding the killings in 1994.
“We could have done so much more. We should have done so much more. In Rwanda, troops were withdrawn when they were most needed.”
