The latest announcement comes just hours after the US announced similar measures against 11 individuals believed to be in President Putin's inner circle.

Calling on President Putin to de-escalate the situation that has followed the referendum in Crimea, the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy warned Moscow that any further steps would have "far-reaching consequence".
