The United Nations Security Council, today, adopted a British-drafted resolution that authorised sanctions against anyone in Yemen who obstructed the country’s political transition or committed human rights violations.
Outlining the purpose of the resolution, the British ambassador to the UN, said,
Commenting on the resolution, US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, said,
The Security Council previously expressed concern over attempts by officials in Yemen, to obstruct reconciliation talks intended to complete a power transfer deal within the country.
The 1990 union between the North and South of Yemen sparked civil conflict, ending in the union being maintained after the dismantlement of the southern secessionists.
Outlining the purpose of the resolution, the British ambassador to the UN, said,
“Those wishing to derail the political transition will face swift and firm consequences through the new sanctions committee.”
Commenting on the resolution, US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, said,
“The council has taken the forward-leaning step of setting up a committee that is prepared to sanction individuals for impeding the ongoing transition in Yemen.”
