South Sudan truce broken

The ceasefire in South Sudan has been broken after clashes erupted between rebels and government forces in the city of Malakal.

At least 10 people were killed in the fighting outside a UN compound which is currently sheltering civilians from different ethnic group.

"The rebels are using assault rifles - AK-47. And they have some RPGs [rocket-propelled grenades] and a number of other machine-guns. They are well-equipped," presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told the BBC.

The UN said in a statement that clashes also broke out inside the compound, saying that “intercommunal clashes flared up within the Protection of Civilians site,” which houses nearly 22,000 people.

“The mission strongly condemns those who instigated the intercommunal violence,” the United Nations statement said, “and reserves the right to take appropriate action against these individuals.”
