UK confirms it advised India on Operation Blue Star

Foreign Secretary William Hague has confirmed that the British government advised India in advance of the Indian military’s assault on Sikhism’s holiest temple.

The attack on Sikh militants in the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984 could have left over 3,000 people dead, Hague said.

The foreign secretary was delivering the findings of a review which looked into claims that the SAS was involved in planning the raids, but said British advice only had "limited impact".

Prime Minister David Cameron said,

"I hope the manner in which we have investigated these dreadful events will provide some reassurance to the Sikh community, here in Britain and elsewhere."

"A single UK military officer provided some advice. But critically, this advice was not followed, and it was a one-off."
