Pillay welcomes decision in Nepal Supreme Court against amnesties

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today welcomed the decision by Nepal's Supreme Court that amnesties should not be granted for serious crimes, committed during the internal conflict.

Commenting on the decision, taken on Thursday, the High Commissioner, Navi Pillay, said:
“This is a significant development for the thousands of  victims of the conflict. The Supreme Court’s decision to block amnesties is the first step towards ensuring that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will not be used to avoid or delay criminal investigations and prosecutions of conflict-related cases,”

“I now call on the Government of Nepal to urgently implement this important decision, in the spirit of working towards genuine and lasting peace, and to respect the demand of the Nepalese people for justice.”
