Manmohan Singh announces retirement with parting shot at Modi

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced that he will retire from office after India’s next elections and attacked opposition leader Narendra Modi in a press conference earlier today.

Announcing that he will step down from his post in the Congress party, Singh went on to say,

“I sincerely believe it would be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as the prime minister”.

Referring back to Modi’s time as Chief Minister of Gujarat, when riots saw hundreds of mainly Muslim civilians killed, Singh added,

“If by strong prime minister you mean you preside over the mass massacre of innocent citizens in the streets of Ahmedabad – if that is the measure of strength – I do not believe that sort of strength this country needs”.

He also defended his record as Prime Minister, in light of a slew of corruption scandals that have tainited the current administration, stating,

“I have tried to serve this country with upmost dedication, commitment and integrity... I have never used this office to enrich or reward my friends or my relatives”.

“History will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or for that matter the opposition parties in parliament.”
