Security forces and opposition activists clashed in Bangaldesh’s capital for the second day yesterday, resulting in at least one death.
Reports suggest that hundreds of people have been detained in the crack-down on protests ahead of next week’s elections and the death of at least one 21 year old protestor.
Security officials, yesterday, surrounded the opposition leader and former prime minister, Khaleda Zia, and parked sand-laden trucks in an alleged effort to inhibit the former prime minister’s movements around the country.
Opposition supporters have been involved in intense protests calling on the current prime-minister, Sheikh Hasina, to allow an independent caretaker to take leadership during next week’s elections. Over 18 political parties have stated that they will not take part in the 5 January elections after the demands for a neutral caretaker were rejected by the government.
