Egypt arrests Al Jazeera journalists

Al Jazeera has demanded the immediate release of four journalists who were arrested in Cairo by the Egyptian government on Sunday evening.

The four arrested men who work for Al Jazeera are, correspondent Peter Greste, producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, and cameraman Mohamed Fawzy.

They were accused by the Egyptian military of spreading "false news" that "damaged national security”. They were also accused of meeting with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation that Egypt’s military government recently declared “terrorist”.

Al Jazeeara, based in Qatar where several prominent Brotherhood figures fled, has faced increasing pressure from Egyptian authorities, having had its Cairo office raided and two staff members arrested in July and August remaining in detention.
