German prosecutor calls for Nazi-era war crimes charges against 94-year-old American

A German prosecutor has called for charges against a 94-year-old man, accused of Nazi-era war crimes, who emigrated to the USA in the late 1940s.

According to Thomas Will, deputy head of the central office investigating Nazi crimes, Ukrainian-born Michael Karkoc is accused of leading killings in the village of Chlaniow in 1944, killing around 40 civilians.

Will stated,
"I came to the conclusion that he was in charge during a crime in Chlaniow... The charge would be about 40 counts of murder."
However, the charges have been denied by Karkoc's family, with his son stating,
"My father is not a criminal, and never was... My father was never a Nazi".
A US Justice Department stated they were aware of the allegations against Karkoc, but added,
"We generally do not confirm nor deny whether an individual is under investigation".
