Closing statements in Khmer Rouge war crimes trial

Cambodia’s UN-backed war crimes tribunal has started hearing closing statements, the final phase before the verdict against former Khmer Rouge leaders is delivered next year.

Spokesperson Lars Olsen said

"This is the final milestone before the verdict. It is the last chance to convince the judges about the case."

The defendants include Nuon Chea, Khmer Rouge’s second in command and Khieu Samphan, head of state. Both are being charged with crimes against humanity, along with two other leaders, for atrocities committed between 1975 and 1979.
