Leaders of African Union members are currently meeting to discuss a withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the court is treating Africans unfairly and that it is specifically targeting African nations.
"Far from promoting justice and reconciliation... the court has transformed itself into a political instrument targeting Africa and Africans. This unfair and unjust treatment is totally unacceptable," he said.
According to analysts, East African states tend to support the withdrawal of African states, while West African countries oppose it.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu has started a campaign against the withdrawal, with a petition which has already collected over 650,000 signatures.
“[L]eaders of Sudan and Kenya, who have inflicted terror and fear across their countries, are trying to drag Africa out of the ICC, allowing them the freedom to kill, rape, and inspire hatred without consequences,” Tutu said.
“I know that together we can change this. But we have to join hands and call on the voices of reason at the African Union (AU) – Nigeria and South Africa – to speak out and ensure that the persecuted are protected by the ICC.”
