The Sri Lankan army's spokesman Ruwan Wanigasooriya reaffirmed the armed forces' right to assist police during civil disturbances, reports the Island.
Speaking in response to a query about whether the Weliweriya shootings would deter future army deployments, Wanigasooriya said that troops had the constitutional power to support police operations and to intervene in the case of police failure.
Wanigasooriya also said that the Court of Inquiry report on the shootings would not be released to the public.
