Conspiracies, conspiracies everywhere

Sri Lanka's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Jagath Jayasuriya has warned of certain elements, including of course 'the LTTE rump', attempting to discredit Sri Lanka in the run up to CHOGM.

Jayasuriya stressed the importance of ensuring that the upcoming visit by Navi Pillay, the next UN Human Rights Council session and the Northern Provincial Council polls all pass incident-free.

The CDS alleged that opposition elements were exploiting social, political and economic situations, including the Weliweriya shootings, to tarnish the state's image and engineer a regime change, and said:

"We aren’t concerned about the media coverage of political developments. But bringing the armed forces into disrepute and ridiculing law enforcement authorities can cause a debilitating setback."
