• Fall in Sri Lanka forex reserves

    Sri Lanka's foreign exchange reserves have dropped to $6,850mn in May 2015 from $7,454mn in April, Economy Next reported.

    The reserves are the lowest since March 2015, when total reserves fell to $6,835mn, according to data from the central bank.

    In April foreign exchange reserves recovered, partly helped by a $400mn swap with the Reserve Bank of India.

  • Shipwrecked asylum seekers appeal for help from New Zealand
    A group of 65 asylum seekers have appealed to New Zealand for intervention, as their boat became shipwrecked after being pushed into Indonesian waters by Australian authorities.

    The group, which includes women and children, were reportedly spotted by Australian authorities, with an Indonesian official saying “according to their testimony, they were pushed back by the Australian navy and immigration after they were interrogated”. The ship then hit a reef and became shipwrecked, with the group currently being held by Indonesian authorities.

    Photos have emerged of the group holding signs in Tamil and English, stating “please try to understand our painful life New Zealand government” and “please save us”.

    Tamil National Alliance MPs took part in a ceremony commencing the construction of a memorial shrine commemorating 21 school children that where killed in a Sri Lankan Air Force attack on a school in Jaffna 20 years ago.

  • Sri Lanka to review ban on 'some' Tamil diaspora organisations
    A committee is reviewing the ban on some diaspora groups said Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry last week.

    Speaking to the Colombo Gazette the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mahishini Colonne said, the review of individuals and entities on the ban occurs annually and is currently underway.

  • Burnt body found dumped in Jaffna
    The burnt body of a Tamil male has been found in Madduvil in Jaffna, reports the Uthayan.

    Locals found the body, identified as 58 year old Sathasivam Sabaratnam, in a bush near a pond in the town. Chavakchcheri police were alerted who recovered the body and sent it to Jaffna Teaching Hospital for a post mortem
  • Arrests at protest against army-built Vihara

    Buddha statue on private Tamil land appropriated by the military in Kokkilaay

    Sri Lankan police arrested the owners of land which was grabbed by the army to build a Buddhist vihara after they held a protest at the location in Kokkilaay, Mullaitivu.

    The owners, Thirugnanasambanthar Mannivannathas, Katharkamu Sivayogeswaran and Loganathan Jude Nimalan, held a symbolic fast outside the vihara, which is being constructed by the military, earlier today.

    Police arrested the men and pressured them to abandon their protest, before releasing them a few hours later.

  • ‘Extremists have invaded sacred Buddhist venues’ claims BBS
    Sinhala nationalist organisation Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) slammed the chief prelate Buddhist monks in Asgiriya and Malwatte, claiming they are “asleep” whilst “extremist” elements have entered their chapters.

    BBS General Secretary Galagodaaththe Gnanasara accused the monks of ignoring issues faced by Sinhala Buddhists on the island.
  • Pon Sivakumaran remembered in North-East

    The first Tamil to die in the liberation struggle was remembered in Jaffna today, on the 41st anniversary of his death.

    Locals gathered at a statue of Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran in his hometown Urumpirai in Jaffna earlier today, and commemorated his life. TNA NPC Councillors Ananthy Sasitharan, AM Shivajilingam and Pradeshiya Sabha member Sajeevan also attended the event.

  • Vehicle used in murder of Tamil MP found

    The getaway vehicle used in the murder of Tamil National Alliance MP Nadarajah Raviraj has been found said Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), amid reports that the weapon used in his killing belonged to the Sri Lankan army.

    The CID informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Nirosha Fernando that the trishaw used in the murder of the Tamil parliamentarian had been found and the magistrate approved further investigations into the vehicle.

    The court was also reportedly informed that the murder weapon used belonged to the Sri Lankan army.


    It follows the arrest of three members of the navy, including two officers, for the November 2006 murder.

  • March for justice for Vithiya in Point Pedro

    A protest march demanding swift justice for the rape and murder of schoolgirl Vithiya took place in Point Pedro on Wednesday.

    Police had reportedly filed for the protest to be barred by the Point Pedro court, but the presiding judge refused to issue a ban on the grounds that it would be undemocratic.

  • Jaffna Press Club calls for inquiry into killings and disappearances of Tamil journalists

    Jaffna Press Club (JPC) has called on Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena, to ensure impartial inquiries are conducted into the murder and disappearance of Tamil journalists.

    In a letter addressed to the President, JPC outlined that many, many Tamil journalists and media workers had been killed or gone missing , particularly in the last two decades.

    Welcoming the President’s announcement to conduct an inquiry into the disappearance of Sinhalese cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda, JPC stressed the need for inquiries into the killings and disappearances of all journalists and media workers, particularly in the North-East.

    JPC emphasised that any such inquiries should be carried out under the watch of impartial international media organisations.
