SL accuses Canada of using Commonwealth funds as political tool

Sri Lanka has accused the Canadian government of using the funding it gives to the Commonwealth as a political tool, holding the body to ransom due to electoral politics, reported Colombo Gazette.

Canada yesterday suspended its voluntary funding to the Commonwealth over ongoing human rights concerns in Sri Lanka and condemning the country’s role as the organisation’s chair.

“It is the Government of Sri Lanka which is best placed to continue the evolution of a home grown solution for its people in accordance with a realistic time frame,” an External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said to the Colombo Gazette.

The Malaysian Prime Minister, Mohd Najib Tun Razak, received the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Dunne at his office today in two separate meetings.

Mother of 'Gopi' released by TID

The mother of one of the Tamil men shot dead by the Sri Lankan military, after claiming that he was attempting to revive the LTTE has been released from prison, reports Uthayan.

The mother of the man, named by the military, as 'Gopi, was arrested by officers of the Terrorism Investigative Division on March 26th along with another woman.

No charges were brought against her.

Tamil media workers demand justice for attacked journalist

Condemning yesterday attack against the journalist Sivagnanam Selvatheepan, the Sri Lankan Tamil Media Alliance called for those responsible to face justice.

"Attacks and threats on journalists in the North has become commonplace nowadays," said K. Jeyandran the group's secretary to Thinakurral.

Calling on the government to take action he said,
"The government should take action to identify the people involved in this attack, to bring them to justice, and to allow journalists in the North to work freely."
"Those who are in charge are failing to arrest the people responsible for such incidents and bring them before justice," Mr. Jeyandran said.

British PM marks Tamil and Sinhala New Year



The British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his best wishes for Sinhala and Tamil New Year today:

MP Lee Scott wishes Tamil diaspora peaceful and happy Chithirai Thirunal

The Conservative MP for Ilford North, and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils expressed his wishes to the Tamil diaspora for 'Chithirai Thirunal' (a special day in the Tamil month of April, widely celebrated as Tamil New Year).

London Mayor Boris Johnson wishes Tamils 'Puthandu Vazthukal'


The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wished the Tamil community in London "Puthandu Vazthukal" as they marked Chithirai Thirunaal or Tamil New Year today.

In a personal message, Mayor Johnson, praised the work and contribution of thousands of Tamil Londoners to the capital city, stating:

We will continue to keep Sri Lanka issue alive' says Stephen Rapp at event on international criminal justice

The US Ambassador-at-large for Global Criminal Justice, Stephen J. Rapp, said at an event in Washington that the US will continue to work to keep the Sri Lanka issue alive, with a view to see justice some day.

Rapp was speaking last Thursday at an event organised by the America Bar Association-International Criminal Court Project, the Aspen Institute Justice & Society Program, and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, entitled International Criminal Justice: Mass Atrocities, The International Criminal Court, and the Role of States.

Modi to tour Tamil Nadu and hold talks with Sri Lanka

The BJP’s candidate to be the next prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, is due to campaign extensively in the Tamil Nadu, reported The Hindu.

The controversial Hindu nationalist politician will visit Chennai, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Ramnad over the next week, with a view to capturing votes for his alliance, which includes Tamil Nadu parties, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Indhiya Jananayaka Katchi and Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi.

Meanwhile the Sri Lankan government has said it is holding a series of talks with Indian politicians, including Narendra Modi.
