Teen charged with hate‑motivated vandalism of Tamil Genocide Monument in Canada

Genocide memorial defaced

A 14‑year‑old has been charged following the defacement of the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton, with police confirming the act was motivated by hate.

The memorial, located in Chinguacousy Park, was vandalised in the early hours of 20 March 2026. Spray‑painted graffiti targeted the monument’s central podium and multiple panels, with messages described by authorities as offensive and hateful.

Peel Regional Police said officers responded swiftly after the damage was discovered by city security personnel. The case was immediately referred to the force’s Hate Crime Unit.

A teenage boy from Brampton was arrested on 31 March and charged with two counts of mischief over $5,000. His identity is protected under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is expected to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

“Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism, especially hate‑motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah, the Canadian Tamil head of the police service responsible for policing Brampton and the neighbouring city of Mississauga.

Unveiled in May 2025, the Tamil Genocide Monument stands as a solemn reminder of the atrocities committed against Tamils by Sri Lankan forces during the final stages of the armed conflict. Its presence has drawn hostility from segments of the Sinhalese diaspora, who have long sought to erase or deny narratives of genocide and atrocities against Tamils.

Since its approval by Brampton City Council in 2021, the monument has remained a flashpoint, symbolising both remembrance for Tamils and discomfort for those aligned with Sri Lankan state denial. The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with further information to come forward.
