Sri Lanka has recorded the highest number of attacks on Indian nationals abroad since 2022, according to official data presented in the Indian Parliament by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The figures, which track reported assaults and incidents across 45 countries, place Sri Lanka far ahead of other nations, with 66 attacks on Indians documented between 2022 and 2025. By comparison, the United States recorded 34 incidents over the same period, the United Kingdom 19, and Canada 19.

In 2023 alone, Sri Lanka reported 30 incidents of violence against Indians, the single highest annual figure in any country listed. Despite a drop in subsequent years, nine assaults have already been recorded in 2025, making it once again one of the most dangerous environments for Indian nationals.
The data highlights a disturbing trend for a country that touts close ties with New Delhi. While Colombo has repeatedly sought Indian diplomatic and financial backing, including during its economic collapse, the record shows that Indians continue to face disproportionate levels of violence on the island.
The MEA figures will add to existing concerns around Colombo’s failure to ensure the safety of foreign nationals. The numbers also come as Tamils in the North-East have repeatedly highlighted attacks and intimidation linked to both Sri Lankan security forces.
Across the globe, the MEA recorded 318 incidents of attacks on Indians between 2022 and 2025. Sri Lanka alone accounted for over one-fifth of the total, underlining the scale of the problem.
