‘Partnership in action’ - US warship to dock in Colombo

The US Navy’s littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32) will arrive at the Port of Colombo on 16 August, in what Washington hails as a demonstration of the “strength” of US - Sri Lanka relations and their “shared commitment” to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.

The stopover, the Santa Barbara’s first in Colombo, will be used to refuel and restock the vessel before it resumes operations across the region. The US Embassy in Colombo has framed the visit as an example of “longstanding ties between our navies” and “close cooperation” between the two states.

The Santa Barbara operates as part of the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet, the largest forward-deployed fleet in the world, tasked with projecting US naval power across the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. The 7th Fleet’s mission includes operational control of US forces in the region, as well as bolstering military alliances and conducting joint operations with partner states.

“This visit reflects our shared commitment to maritime security, regional stability, and a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said U.S. Ambassador Julie Chung, describing the ship’s arrival as “a powerful symbol of the U.S.–Sri Lanka partnership in action”.

“We’re proud to stand alongside Sri Lanka as we work together to promote peace and prosperity across the region.”

The visit comes amid continued criticism of Washington’s growing military engagement with Sri Lanka, despite the island’s dismal human rights record and entrenched impunity for war crimes.

Successive US administrations have deepened naval cooperation and joint training with Sri Lanka, even as Tamil families of the disappeared continue to face harassment, militarisation in the North-East persists, and the Prevention of Terrorism Act remains in force.
