Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney backed Public Security Minister Gary Anandasangaree and affirmed his support for Tamil Canadians, after racist and xenophobic attacks last month.

In a letter addressed to the National Council of Canadian Tamils, Carney acknowledged the enduring pain and trauma carried by Tamil Canadians.

“I also understand the pain, loss, and devastation that Tamil Canadians carry from the genocide against them,” wrote Carney. “My deepest sympathies go out to those who lost loved ones and Canada will continue to support independent international efforts to seek accountability and push for truth and justice.”

In the letter, Carney reiterated his government’s support for diversity and inclusivity.

“Our government stands for an inclusive Canada where we embrace our diversity as an exceptional strength, and we stand against hatred and xenophobia,” wrote Carney. “No Canadian should face hatred over their nationality or religion.”

He continued, “Our government deeply values the contributions that Minister Anandasangaree has and continues to make, and he has my full confidence in his role in Cabinet. I am also proud of his legacy as the second minister of Tamil descent to hold office.”

The letter concluded with the Prime Minister extending his “very best wishes” and reiterating that Canada “will continue to build a more united Canada.”
