Sri Lanka’s police issue instructions to boost Miss World contestant

Anudi Gunasekera

In an unusual move, Sri Lanka’s Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Priyantha Weerasooriya, has issued a nationwide directive instructing police personnel to support Anudi Gunasekara - Sri Lanka’s contestant in the 72nd Miss World which was held in India.

Gunasekara is the daughter of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hemantha Gunasekara, who serves as the Director of the Traffic Police Division. The directive, issued in the form of a circular, has been sent to all Senior DIGs, DIGs, commanding officers, directors, OICs, and headquarters inspectors across the country.

The letter lays out detailed instructions on how officers should contribute to increasing Gunasekara’s online popularity. This includes downloading the official Miss World app, casting votes for her, and actively engaging with her social media accounts by liking, commenting, and following. The circular cites that social media engagement plays a role in the competition’s selection process.

A congratulatory message recognising her role as Sri Lanka’s representative at Miss World was also officially shared by the Sri Lanka Police this week.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddika Manathunga defended the move, asserting that “her representation brings honour to the country.” He also insisted that no public funds were used and drew comparisons to state-backed promotional campaigns for Sri Lanka Cricket in the past.

However, the directive has sparked criticism and concern given the context in which it has emerged. The order comes at a time when Sri Lanka is grappling with a sharp escalation in gun crimes and underworld-related killings, many of which remain unresolved. The Police Department has faced increasing scrutiny for its inability to curb the growing violence, which has left general public fearful and has raised questions over law enforcement priorities.
