Slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge was remembered on the 14th anniversary of his death in Batticaloa yesterday. 

Wickrematunge, the former editor of Sunday Leader, a staunch critic of the various human rights violations perpetrated by the Rajapaksa government and the corruption by its ministers was gunned down on January 8, 2009 on his way to work.

Popular Sri Lankan YouTuber and social activist, Sepal Amarasinghe, has been arrested in Boralesgamuwa by the Sri Lankan Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following allegedly defamatory remarks he made towards the Buddhist Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (‘Dalada Maligawa’) in Kandy.

In his video, the YouTuber reportedly caused offence through his description of the Sacred Tooth Relic as a ‘labba’, which is often used in Sinhala as a euphemism for male genitalia.

Sri Lanka’s president orders for the end of land grabs- PLOTE leader claims

Leader of the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Dharmalingam Siddarthan, has claimed that Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered for the immediate halting of land grabs in the North and East.

The reported order follows meetings between the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Sri Lanka’s president, during which the TNA pushed for the release of Tamil land seized by the Sri Lankan government and military and for the release of Tamil political prisoners.

Canadian politicians from across the political spectrum put out statements and tweets wishing the Tamil-Canadian community for Tamil Heritage month in Canada.

In his statement member of parliament (MP) Ahmed Hussen stated that “January marks the beginning of Tamil Heritage month in Canada, a time to reflect on the rich history, culture, resiliency, and strength of the Tamil communities across the country.”

Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre wished Tamil-Canadians a happy Tamil Heritage month in his statement. Poilievre emphasized that Canada will always remain an ally to the Tamil community.
