Activists handed a petition to the Governor of the Northern Province, demanding them to release occupied lands.
The Voice of Women, a women’s rights organisation, the National Fisheries Cooperative, and activists from the South marched to the Governor's office in Jaffna to hand over the petition.
The petition was formulated as a response to a series of field visits that gathered data on the number of lands in the Northern province that are currently being occupied, resulting in the displacement of the owners of the properties.
The petition drew attention to the conditions the landowners were facing living in internally displaced camps, and requested the release of the lands to the rightful owners and resettle them.
As the Governor was unavailable at the time, the petition was handed over to officials in the Governor’s office.
