Labour MP slams British Government for failing to sanction Sri Lankan officials

Responding to the Canadian government imposing historic sanctions on the former president and prime minister of Sri Lanka, British MP Gareth Thomas has slammed the British government for its failure to follow suit.

Despite repeated calls from British MPs, UN officials, human rights organisations and Tamil survivor communities, the British Government has not imposed a single sanction on a Sri Lankan government or military official, a decision which Shadow Minister, Stephen Kinnock, described as “moral failing”. In contrast, the United States and Canada have imposed several sanctions on Sri Lanka state officials responsible for egregious human rights violations.
