Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R Sampanthan met Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay in Colombo last month, where he reportedly sought a one-on-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the meeting at the Baglay’s official residence India House, the two reportedly discussed “India’s development and economic cooperation in Sri Lanka including in the North and the East”.
The Sunday Times reported that Sampanthan “the meeting was the outcome of a pending request from TNA leadership seeking a one-on-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
It also reported that the UN resolution on accountability for mass atrocities, which mandates a hybrid court to prosecute perpetrators, was discussed and that Modi was invited to Jaffna to inaugurate the opening of an Indian funded Jaffna Cultural Centre. The construction cost a reported Rs 1.2 billion.

Sampanthan’s meeting with Baglay comes just weeks after Modi told Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa that the implementation of the 13th Amendment remained “essential”.
