Sri Lanka’s cabinet ministers are planning to curtail powers of the independent Auditor General to hold those responsible for fraud accountable warned anti-corruption organisation Transparency International.
The anti-corruption organisation called on the government to keep in line with international best practices and maintain the powers vested to the Auditor General, and expressed concern at the attempts by Sri Lanka’s cabinet to edit key parts of the National Audit Bill.
The Executive Director of Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL), Asoka Obeysekara, said the passing of the National Audit Bill is essential to strengthen financial accountability across the state structure, adding it was a key pledge of President Maithripala Sirisena’s 100 day manifesto.
The organization called on Sri Lanka’s cabinet to "display commitment to fighting corruption and enhance scrutiny of public finance by tabling the National Audit Bill before parliament," reports Colombo Page.
