Rwandan general arrested in London over genocide

The head of Rwanda's intelligence services has been arrested in London, over accusations about his involvement in massacres during the country's genocide.

General Karenzi Karake, 54, was arrested at Heathrow Airport on Saturday, under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Spain, which obliges Britain to act. It is understood the general previously travelled to Britain without trouble.

The Rwandan government reacted with anger to the arrest, with  Louise Mushikiwabo, Rwanda's foreign minister, calling the arrest "an outrage" adding: "Western solidarity in demeaning Africans is unacceptable". Williams Nkurunziza, Rwanda's High Commissioner to the UK, said it was "an insult to our collective conscience".

A Spanish judge indicted Gen Karake in 2008 for the alleged war crimes, along with 39 other current or former senior Rwandan military officials.

Ignacio Jovtis, of Amnesty International in Madrid, said he hoped Gen Karake would be sent to face trial in Spain: "We think that Spain has started the investigation in 2008 and nothing happened until today. It is good news".
