Al Jazeera journalists freed on bail by Egyptian court

A court in Cairo has agreed to release two Al Jazeera journalists on bail after being held for more than 400 days on charges of aiding terrorism.

The charges against the two men are still pending, with the next hearing set for February 23.

The release of the two men, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed was hailed by their relatives.

Commenting on the release, an Al-Jazeera spokesman said,

Following his release, Baher Mohamed sent this tweet from his Twitter account.

Fahmy, a naturalised Canadian must put up 250,000 Egyptian pounds (£21,000), but his fiancée Marwa Omara, said, “We’re willing to pay whatever it takes to see Mohamed. “I want to see him with me. I want to have a romantic dinner with him. Go to the beach. Dance, enjoy life,” she said.
“Bail is a small step in the right direction, and allows Baher and Mohamed to spend time with their families after 411 days apart. The focus though is still on the court reaching the correct verdict at the next hearing by dismissing this absurd case and releasing both these fine journalists unconditionally.”
