The Sri Lankan army assaulted three civilians involved in a road traffic accident following a minor altercation, said Kilinochi MP Sritharan.
According to reports, the incident occurred after a Sri Lankan tourist bus collided into a private bus from Mullaitheevu. Although the drivers soon resolved their dispute, the Sri Lankan army officers stood nearby intervened and began attacking the drivers, Tamil conductor and the Tamil owner of the Mullaitheevu bus. When the driver tried to seek refuge in a nearby shop, the army chased him inside and continued to attack him.
Shortly after the incident, Sritharan, who visited the area, found that Mullaitheevu bus owner, driver and conductor had been severely attacked. Despite their wounds and lack of medical attention, they were being taken by the police for questioning. The tourist bus from the South had left the scene, and army officers who had been involved were stood casually by.
When Sritharan questioned the police who was in charge - the police or the army - the police were unable to respond.
Condemning the ongoing violence perpetrated by the Sri Lankan army on Tamil civilians amid shameless impunity, Sritharan pledged that the Tamil national alliance will bring the issue to the attention of parliament, whilst pursuing the unresolved issue of war crimes. He said the Army continues to behave inhumanely and the Tamil people cannot simply stand idly by and watch all of this.
