Yemeni president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi called on the United Nations to dispatch “urgent intervention” to the country, as Houthi militants took over Yemen's third largest city.
Mr Hadi called for UN assistance “in all available means to stop this aggression”, after the Houthi took over Taiz seizing the city airport and other areas. His speech was the first televised address by the president, since he fled from house arrest in the capital Sanaa last month.
The latest developments come after the United States confirmed the departure of the remaining military personnel from Yemen due to the “deteriorating security situation”. Commenting on the evacuation, US state department spokesperson Jeff Rathke said the US would continue to support Yemen's "political transition" but added "there is no military solution to Yemen's current crisis".
