Weapons stash 'found' in Jaffna by police

A stash of old weapons were removed from a ditch along a busy roady in Pommaiveli, Jaffna, security forces have claimed.

Police, Special Task Force and the military were present as the weapons were taken. Assault rifles, grenades and ammunition were amongst the weapons removed from the location.

Police claimed they were tipped off about the stash by local residents and after getting permission from the local judge, they informed the press and took journalists along to recover the weapons with the help of the STF.

Residents of the town cast doubt on the police version of the story, saying it is likely to be a further excuse for increased security presence ahead of Maaveerar Naal commemorations on Monday.
