On the 14th anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide, the UK’s Minister for Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, released a statement reaffirming the government’s commitment to “pursuing truth, justice and accountability for all victims of Sri Lanka’s conflict”.
In the final stages of the armed conflict, an estimated 169,796 Tamil were slaughtered during a brutal military campaign by the Sri Lankan military. The Sri Lankan army engaged in the indiscriminate shelling of hospitals, food lines and government-designated "no-fire" zones.
The Minister’s statement reads:
Today we stand in solidarity with Tamil & all affected communities in Sri Lanka, & across the world as we remember the Mullivaikkal tragedy in 2009. The UK is committed to pursuing truth, justice and accountability for all victims of Sri Lanka’s conflict. @UKinSriLanka pic.twitter.com/NpQNYEsyYW
