Tamil diaspora groups ask Canadian Parliament to bring Sri Lankan officials to international courts

Tamil diaspora groups are asking Ottawa to bring Sri Lankan officials to international tribunals.

Earlier this month the Canadian government imposed sanctions on four Sri Lankan state officials. This includes two of Sri Lanka's former presidents, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as well as two former Sri Lankan soldiers.

Ottawa sanctioned the four high-ranking officials for alleged human rights violations during the Island's 26-year conflict.

According to a board member with the Federation of Global Tamil Organizations, Vel Velautahpillai, the Tamil diaspora "has been calling for a new Nuremberg-like tribunal to prosecute the leadership of the government of Sri Lanka.

Tamil groups state that Canada has set a good example for other countries. Velautahpillai's Federation is now calling on other G7 countries to follow suit.

Tamil activists are also asking the Liberal government to begin the process of bringing the Sri Lankan officials to the International Criminal Court over the alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Further, Tamil diaspora groups also wish to see Sri Lanka brought before the International Court of Justice. Velautahpillai stated that his group placed a request to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Melanie Joly, about three weeks ago.

The Federation of Global Tamil Organizations have stated that the Sri Lankan state has committed genocide for which it also needs to be held accountable.
